Biography: born and grew up in İmishli district, Azerbaijan.

Education: 

  • Postdoctoral certificate: University of California Davis (2010-2012)
  • Professional trainee in IWRM: Water Research Institute, Michigan State University (2006-2007)
  • Professional trainee in Like Basin Management (2008); International Lake Committee, Japan
  • PHD in Geography: Baku State University (2002)
  • MS in Geography: Baku State University (1995).

The main area of expertise is hydrology. Dr Abbasov also worked a lot on issues of natural disaster management, including floods, droughts, and climate change. 

Author of more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications. Author of the monograph “Community-Based Disaster Risk Management in Azerbaijan”. Since 2001 managed and consulted more than 50 international projects supported by GAHP, OXFAM GB, IPBES, FAO, CENN, USAID, WWF, WB, UNICEF, IREX. 

Since 2007 has been working as Associate Professor, Head of the Geography and Environmental Sciences Department of Khazar University, Azerbaijan. 

Dr. Abbasov is a Visiting Scholar in of University of California, Davis USA, Michigan State University USA, International Lake Environmental Committee, Japan. 

Member of Mountain Partnership, International Mountain Society, US Educated Azerbaijani Alumni Association, Water Integrity Network, Global Water Partnership, Member of the Commission for Hydrology, World meteorological Organization, Mountain Partnership, International Association of Hydrological Sciences, American Institute of Hydrology, International Lake Environmental Committee.

Responsibilities:  Research and Program Management of projects in Azerbaijan.
